The Referral
Standby Healthcare were commissioned by a local authority to provide a bespoke support package for a 15 year old young person with highly complex needs.
The young person had a history of absconding, substance misuse and behaviours that placed them at significant risk. They were also diagnosed with ADHD and Oppositional Defiant Disorder (ODD) and were subject to a Section 31 Care Order.
Due to the complexity of the package, our team worked closely with the Local Authority and wider multidisciplinary professionals to develop a tailored support plan. Experienced support workers were carefully selected, with enhanced briefings, risk assessments and specialist trainingng provided to ensure they were fully prepared before the package commenced.
The Challenges
At the beginning of the placement, the young person regularly absconded, engaged in substance misuse and frequently placed themselves in situations that presented significant safeguarding concerns.
Our experienced support workers focused on building trust through consistent, non-judgemental support while maintaining close communication with the wider care team. Daily well-being checks, emotional support and structured activities helped to encourage safer decision making and reduce risk.
Within the first three months, encouraging progress was evident. Incidents of absconding reduced, engagement with staff improved and the young person began accessing recognised community safe spaces during periods of heightened risk.
Relationships with staff significantly improved, allowing support workers to intervene earlier and provide more effective guidance where required, demonstrating the value of consistency and relationship building.
The Outcome
While the young person continues to require specialist support, the foundations for long-term progress have been firmly established.
Our team remains committed to working alongside the Local Authority, education providers and the wider care network to promote stability, independence and positive life choices.
We also continue to prioritise supporting the young person to re-engage with education, strengthen emotional wellbeing and continue reducing high risk behaviours.
